Voodoo started in Western Sahara and is derived from the African practices of Nigeria, Benin and Togo, where the Yobura people live. The word voodoo is derived from the West African word, "Vodun", which means "spirit". Voodoo practitioners believe in one God. The 1700s - 1800s brought masses of slaves from Africa to the Caribbean to work on the plantations. The ceremonies were built with invocations, drums, dances, songs and the sacrifice of creatures.
The plantation owners thought they were wild and tried to Christianize the slaves. Since there were many similarities between the two religions, Catholicism was incorporated into the voodoo religion. In the late 1700s the advent of slavery, along with the tradition of slave vodu, occurred in Louisiana. Although the Catholic Church attempted to baptize slaves, slaves found a way to mask their rituals. After a time, Voodoo in Louisiana changed and evolved into what is now known as "Louisiana Voodoo".
Voodoo queens?
Louisiana's first known voodoo queen is DeDe Sainte '. She came from Santo Domingo and allegedly bought her freedom. Sainte 'held ceremonies in her courtyard on Dumaine St. She became an inspiration to Marie Laveau, Louisiana's most famous voodoo queen. There are many illusions when it comes to the practice of voodoo.
